I love Italy for all it’s places and for it’s food.
As I enjoy travelling , each year , over the last 7 years I have visited a new place.
I have long desired to visit the Amalfi Coast , in South-Western Italy , near Naples. Finnaly my wish came true, I got the chance to spend 2 great weeks there, but it felt like days.
Having some friends in the area , I got the chance to see all the splendid landscapes that Amalfi Coast has to offer. By doing this I had few road trips , which from my point of view is the best way to get around the area and to fully benefit from the amazing scenery. During my time there I had the change to visit by car all the important towns form the region , like Salerno , Minori , Amalfi and Positano. All of these towns are worth visiting. I have been fascinated by the local traditions , local food and drinks , not to mention that the local people are extremely friendly.
All the towns have a specific meditereanean scent which can be found in all of the towns along the Amalfi Coast. The scent is one of fresh pastas , fresh tomatos , sea salt and othe meditereanean spices. All of theese can be felt on the narrow streets amognst the food stands and coffee shops.
The scenery is so amaying that I had to stop for at every parking spot to take pictures ( I know its a bit exaggerated but you have to see for yourself 🙂
The coast got its name from Amalfi , which is the most visited town in the area, also known as The Lemon Town.
Must eat and drink :
Pizza – You can find delicious and fresh take away pizza at almost every corner. The smell of fresh tomatos , mozzarella , and basil make you crave for a slice even if you are not hungry. At some stands you can find pizza with small potatoes balls.
Espresso – strong! not for the fainthearted 🙂
Gelato – homemade gelato. I ate daily and still could not try them all. Maybe next time.
Limoncello – the Mediterranean climate of the Sorrento – Amalfi coast guarantees the increase of a lemon with large and perfumed peel – Limoncello is an excellent digestive if served cold. The origin of the drink is not known , but if you ask the locals thex will say that their town invented it.
Aperol Spritz – even more famous that Limoncello , it is best served with a slice of orange in a chilled glass. I presonally love it before a caprese dish.
Arancini – in the narrow strrets of Salerno I found these little rice balls stuffed with mushrooms or meat. Delicios …
Risi e bisi, or “rice and peas,” may not sound like Italy’s most sophisticated dish, but it’s surprisingly flavorful. As the name suggests, it consists only of rice and peas.
Tortellini with spinach and ricotta – my favourite from all the pasta dishes
Zuppa di cozze – napoletana – if you enjoy seafood this is a must. I personally have two dishes every time.
Torrone – It’s a creamy, sticky, nougat-like candy made with honey, egg whites, toasted nuts, and citrus zest, sold in thick slabs at cafes and sweet shops across Italy. I love the ones with pistachio
Must see :
Salerno – the biggest town on the Coast , with narrow streets , food stands , small shops , terraces and coffee shops
A street from Positano is one of the most beautiful places in the world as voted by tourists
Ischia and Capri – can be reached only by boat , on a daily basis but at a determined schedule from Salerno and Positano. The way there reveals some amaying scenery
Pompeii – for the history passionates
The view of Napes form the top of Mount Versuvius ( one of the most deadlz active vulacnos in all Europe)
Hope I made you a bit curious to visit the Amalfi Coast. Please feel free to share your experiences if you visited these amazing places…
